Vincent Segal

Vincent Segal studied music from primary school. He joined the Conservatoire de Reims in the class of Pierre Penassou, then the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, where he won a first prize. In 1986, he received a scholarship to study at Banff Fine Art School in Canada. Back in France, he moved to Paris where he began to multiply musical experiences with musicians from all walks of life (classical first, and contemporary, but also and more and more jazz, rock, African music...). Invited to the United States to participate in the band's first album Dad's CultureHe then toured with Chuck Brown and the P-Funk All Stars. He plays with the route and from time to time with the Ensemble Intercontemporain (solo electric cello of Professor Bad Trip of Fausto Romitelli). Besides, he plays both acoustic and electric cello. This led him to participate in the albums of many artists, such as Steve Nieve, Elvis Costello, Cesaria Évora, Blackalicious, Carlinhos Brown, or Alexandre Desplat (B.Os de Lust, Deposit, A very discreet hero, The veil of illusions), and to play on stage with Papa Wemba, NanaVasconcelos, or in duet with Doudou n'Diaye Rose junior, and in trio with jazz trombonist Glenn Ferris, a trio recording three records. In 1996, he took part in the Olympic Gramofon, group of Julien Loureau, in which he met Cyril Atef with whom he founded shortly after their famous duo Bumcello, which their friend Vic Moan described as "industrial music for Third World countries". In 2006 Bumcello obtained with the album Sophisticated animal A Victory of Music. He collaborated with Matthieu Chedid (-M-) from his first album, Baptism in 1997, then on the following. He directed Franck Monnet's albums (The Embellies, Charles Cros Grand Prix), Jeanne Cherhal (Twelve times a year, Charles Cros Grand Prix), Dupain (Camina), and Georges Moustaki (Solitaire). In 2002, he released his first album, T-Bone Guarnerius, where he invites Magic Malik, Sébastien Martel, Piers Faccini, Mama Ohandja, Glenn Ferris, Vic Moan, Gilles Coronado and Pascal Palisco. In 2007, it recorded Cello, available only in vinyl. 2008 marks his collaboration with Triyo for whom he signs the arrangements of their fourth album. In October 2009, he released the album Chamber Music in collaboration with kora player Ballaké Sissoko and recorded in Salif Keïta's studio in Mali. The same month released Sting's album If we have winter's night... (title inspired by Si by a winter night... by Italo Calvino), album of songs on the theme of winter. Vincent participated in the album, and followed Sting during the next mini tour. The two men met a year earlier, during the recording and then the performances of Steve Nieve's opera Welcome to the Voice Châtelet, Paris. He also played with the French rapper of Malian origin Oxmo Puccino during his acoustic tours for several years. He realizes and plays on King without coach, which receives the Victory of the urban music album of 2013. In 2016, he was named to the Victoires de la musique for the World of the Year album with Musique de Nuit. In 2017, he was part of the CrossBorder Blues trio with Harrison Kennedy (en) and Jean-Jacques Milteau, who recorded an album of the same name in 2018.
He played with many other artists such as Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Cyro Baptista, and in 2012 he accompanied Marianne Faithfull, among others forShakespeare's sonnets.
