Les Allumés du Jazz published this double CD in 2006, directed by Jean-Jacques Birgé, for their 10th anniversary.
39 labels recorded 34 unissued tracks (130 minutes).
Each label produced a maximum of 4 minutes of sound and had the choice of putting them on either of the two CDs, respectively « LES ALLUMÉS » or « DU JAZZ ». If they wished, they could split their contribution between the two.
Each piece is preceded by a short preamble, letting listeners « reset their counters » before the next track. These intervals were recorded either by the producers or the musicians themselves or during meetings and phone conversations with Jean-Jacques Birgé.
Each label was at liberty to create its own virtual front cover as if for a whole CD. Taking his cue from Michael Snow’s Cover to Cover, Birgé imagined a booklet with inverted back and front. It can be read in either direction just by turning it around. A special effort went into the presentation of this album hoping to make it something people will want to own : our way of saying we believe in the enduring value of the disk, and in combating piracy by arousing desire, not by criminalizing consumers.
A special issue of the magazine Les Allumés du Jazz (#14) was devoted to the album,
containing many documents, articles and pictures pertaining to the tracks on
the two CDs or to the labels themselves.
